The Ribeiro Wine Route is located in the western part of the province of Ourense, in the valleys formed by the confluence of the rivers Miño, Avia, and Arnoia and Barbantiño. It is the Appellation of oldest historical trajectory in Galicia, and its distribution, unlike the other Appellations, does not establish sub zones.
Its proximity to major airports such as Vigo and Santiago de Compostela or future infrastructures such as the the AVE Madrid-Ourense, which in the medium term, will place the line only 15 minutes from the centre of O Ribeiro, makes it a destination accessible from all the major cities which have shown tourist interest in the country: Madrid, Barcelona and the entire northern peninsula.
Its location makes O Ribeiro a potential for tourist development. Its proximity to the capital of Ourense and good road access, can place it as a two-fold tourist destination:
1. As a main destination, with its proximity to major motorways that head to the centre and north of the peninsula and the fact that it is forty minutes away from the airports of Vigo and Santiago de Compostela.
2. As a satellite tourist Destination with other combined destinations, such as Santiago de Compostela to the North (45 minutes), Northern Portugal to the South (40 minutes)Rias Baixas to the West (45 minutes) Ourense to the east (15 minutes) and other destinations as may be the winter season of Manzaneda in Trives (2 hours).
This is the oldest Appellation in Galicia. It h counted on the protection of the Wine Statute since 1932 by the Regulatory Council was formed in 1956. It comprises of 2749 ha. of vineyards.
The lush vegetation comprises of oak, chestnut and pine forests hiding in many cases the ancient vineyards that are now being recuperated. The cultivation of vine is what today, conditions much of the landscape. Besides the wineries, huge palaces, Roman bridges, , Romanesque churches and chapels and hundreds of barns “horreos” and stone crosses greet the traveller.
